What are the benefits of different fabrics?

A t-shirt is a t-shirt is a t-shirt, right? Ha. You know better. When it comes to tees, there are tons of varieties in styles, cuts and fabrics.  Style and cut are often a personal choice, but choosing the right fabric is more of a practical one.

This guide will help demystify the available types of fabrics, so you can always choose the best one for you and your brand.

Let’s start with the basics cotton, polyester and rayon. You probably have lots of shirts in your closet made from all three. Cotton is made from natural materials (the cotton plant) soft and lightweight and feels pleasant against your skin. Polyester is manufactured and is strong, quick-drying and wrinkle-resistant. Rayon is made from natural fibers to be a cost-effective alternative to silk. It is silky and breathable.

From here things get a bit more complicated, starting with a poly-cotton blend. As you might assume, this is a blend of polyester and cotton. It combines the light feel of cotton with the strength you expect from polyester. Tri-blend t-shirts are made from a combination of cotton, polyester and rayon.  While not as soft as pure cotton, they are still soft, and combine the strength of polyester with the breathability of rayon.

How do you choose the right fabrics?

Now that you know the basics of fabrics, how do you decide which one is best for your needs? It depends on what you plan on your t-shirt being used for.

Everyday use – Cotton and rayon provide comfort and style for everyday wear. Poly-cotton blends are another good choice.

Sports – For rigorous athletic endeavors, the logical choice is polyester. Strong enough to stand up to tough activity, it will keep its shape and stay looking good.

Fitness – For the exercise junkies, rayon and especially tri-blends are the fabrics of choice. Quick-drying and breathable, they’ll help you keep cool even when you’re working hard.
